Exercise and Acne
Some people believe that exercise and acne are interrelated, while others are sure that exercising actually causes acne. While this may seem to be the case, it is most assuredly not possible for exercise to directly be the cause of acne, though it can excite a breakout for which acne medication is needed. What is the difference, and how can these breakouts be controlled for individuals who find it important to stay fit but are constantly having to rely on acne treatments?
It is not the exercise itself that causes a breakout. Rather, when you workout, you sweat, secreting salt water from your pores. If there is dirt present, as the sweat dries, it traps the dirt within the pores, creating a breeding ground for a pimple and thus an infection, leading to the need for acne medication to relieve the problem. Therefore, the problem with exercise that actually renders your problem with acne is sweat. Of course, this is combined with dirt and oils that collect on your face throughout the day and night.
In order to reduce your need for acne medication, you have to reduce the amount of dirt and oil on the skin, as well as the amount of sweat that covers your face. Start by wearing a headband to prevent sweat produced in the head from dripping onto the face and clogging additional pores. Keep a dry cloth with you while you work out so you can wipe sweat from your face periodically before it dries. The second step to avoiding the need for acne treatments is to make sure your face is clean. Prior to working out, thoroughly wash your face with a gentle moisturizing soap, and do so again immediately after your workout. This will keep the pores clearer so there is less chance of infection.
In the instance that you do break out after a workout, look to acne medication like Proactiv acne treatment.
